What Is a Songwriters Circle?

We're putting something a little different on at the King of Clubs this Friday 22nd April.

Three critically-acclaimed Devon singer-songwriters will be performing in a format that originates in the American home of country, blues, folk and roots music in Nashville.

The event will also be seated.

Sarah Yeo, Greg Hancock and Adam Sweet will be performing in a "Songwriters' Round". This is something a bit different to the usual live band format people have become used to at the venue. The 3 acts remain on stage for the whole concert and take it in turns to perform a song, as opposed to performing their entire sets, one after the other.

This makes for a different kind of show, as audiences can truly get up close and personal with the performers. Each songwriter can join in with the others, add harmonies, contribute a guitar riff, or just listen. Writers will also talk about how and why they wrote the songs, and there will be lively stories and interaction between the writers.

This kind of live music event originated in Nashville, where it became a hallmark tradition. The classic version is three or more songwriters in a circle, taking turns to sing their songs, with the audience seated up close and personal to the performers. When done well, these are really great shows.

There’s an intimacy and inclusiveness in the room that you won’t find anywhere else. And in addition to the privilege of listening to original music performed by the writer, audiences get to hear first-hand the story behind each song.

Tickets are just £5 and doors are 7.30 - 11pm on Friday 22nd April.

About the Performers

Sarah Yeo

Native Devonian girl Sarah Yeo plays her brand of “country folk” and has been making an impression on the Live music scene for at least two decades performing her way around many venues both large and small in the UK.

In more recent years she has won fans performing across the pond in New York City and California. Likened to voices such as Karen Carpenter, the Corrs, Mary Chapin Carpenter to name a few. Her versatility has made for a very interesting gigging past playing in various bands and as a soloist she has also gained endorsements from household names, including; "Beautiful Voice" (BBC Introducing) "Plenty to Tickle the ear, four stars****" (Maverick Magazine)

Adam Sweet

Independent guitarist and singer-songwriter Adam Sweet marked his evolution into a fully-fledged blues-rock artist with the release of his second studio album ‘Sink or Swim’ in 2020. With brooding ballads and rollicking rootsy rock he delivers honest tales of loss, longing and hope as he continues to carve out his own territory between classic rock, blues and Americana.

Greg Hancock

Greg Hancock is a singer-songwriter and guitarist with a widespread reputation as one of the most original and skilful artists on the modern acoustic music scene in the UK today. He has been compared to artists as varied as Al Stewart, John Martyn and Joni Mitchell.

He started composing his own songs soon after receiving his first guitar aged 11 but, apart from a brief period in his late teens and early twenties when he did some floor spots at local folk clubs, circumstances meant he didn’t perform live until returning to the UK in 2012 after many years overseas. He quickly established himself as a regular performer on the local acoustic music scene in the South West of England and further afield, and secured several high-profile support slots as well as his own shows and appearances at notable festivals.

Greg Hancock Since 2015, Greg has released three full length albums and several EPs, all to enthusiastic critical acclaim in the music press and media.
